HERON, CONCRETE BOLLARD, CHRISTCHURCH, JUNE Specimen collected: threshold, between lit interior and open sky Temperature at collection: 5°C, no wind Condition: alert, unperturbed, vertical Distinguishing feature: white face turned upward, as if reading something in the dark Also present at site: one human male, 54, lanyard still attached Behavioural note: neither specimen moved toward the other Behavioural note: neither specimen moved away Sky: clear to the point of aggression Party: ongoing, behind glass, mouths working Conclusion: the threshold is a habitat Further note: some creatures are native to the gap
