PITCH SEASON: A FIELD GUIDE The Broadcaster (common). Arm raised, weight forward, chin tilted three degrees above horizon. Habitat: any room with a projector. Call: ascending cadence on every clause. Never found at rest. The Pivoting Founder (migratory). Caught mid-turn, as if the truth just arrived from the left. Plumage: open collar, sleeves pre-rolled. Subspecies difficult to distinguish without examining the deck. The Lectern Species (sedentary). Grips the edges. Leans forward as if gravity itself must be persuaded. Feeding behaviour: consumes silence, produces momentum. The Listener (rare, possibly endangered). Seated. Head slightly tilted. Does not display. Not once, in forty years of fieldwork, have we observed it taking the floor. Note on population dynamics: the above species appear in grids. Counts vary. All samples collected above a single stratum of cloud, beyond which no sky has been recorded.
