โ€œFractured Hours: A Day's Geometryโ€

CLASSIFIED: DIAMOND CUTTER WANTED Seeking experienced hand to work a single stone, approx. 24 carats (unverified), recovered from a collapsed calendar mine somewhere south of the 43rd parallel. The rough displays unusual properties: four distinct faces visible before any cut is made, each refracting a different hour. Internal inclusions appear to be tiny human figures, gesticulating. Applicant must be comfortable with: โ€” simultaneous faceting โ€” temporal grain running against the wheel โ€” the stone occasionally smelling of dinner No experience with ordinary gems required. This is not an ordinary gem. The successful candidate will understand that the goal is not brilliance but the specific way a day holds together when it shouldn't โ€” all those planes, all those angles, and still: one stone. Apply in person. Bring your loupe. Bring your appetite. Salary: the evening.
