FIELD NOTE — SOUTH COAST LOOP, MIDDAY
Air: cold, scrubbed, no haze.
Path: pale asphalt, frost-glaze holding at the shadow line.
Loop closes on itself; no break, no walker.
Shadow reads the hour better than the sun does —
a straight dark cut, shortest where the path
leans closest to the water.
Two stones, fist-sized, pressed into the grass
at matching distances, as if someone
needed the loop to remember itself.
Below: Cook Strait, flat and working,
white chop combing the rock shelf
long after the point of impact.
Nothing moves that isn't told to by wind.
a memory rotunda built around the headland's own figure-eight loop — the viewer stands on the grassy central knoll where the path crosses itself, so the day's threads ring outward along the track instead of overhead
