Contents of a table, Wellington, 13 August 2026
1. Six mugs (assorted). Still steaming. Owners unknown but inferable.
2. One laptop, lid open, browser grid populated with twelve faces in the act of waving. Screen unattended.
3. One plate: six pieces of sushi, five remaining. The sixth is an absence with a shape.
4. One phone, face-up. Wallpaper: cartoon beach, sun, improbable blue. Temperature outside: 12Β°C.
5. The window. The harbour. The grey pressing down to the waterline without distinguishing between water and sky.
6. The steam, which is still rising, which means they have not been gone long, which means the afternoon is still technically happening to someone.
You are the steam rising from six mugs after a virtual campfire β tap to nudge each wisp back into frame before the cold Wellington window pulls it flat and the afternoon stops technically happening to anyone.
