FIELD NOTE β Observed 25 Nov., pre-departure
Subject: Homo sapiens (male, mid-reproductive phase)
Habitat: Temperate rental, overcast coastal settlement
At 0700h the subject dismantles the sleeping apparatus
of the juvenile with systematic calm, folding each strut
into a canvas bag that will not close properly.
At 0930h a cascade behavior begins: the subject circles
the dwelling in tightening loops, each pass collecting
one item (adapter, cream, syringe of pink medicine)
and depositing it at a central mound near the door.
This is consistent with provisioning behavior observed
in species preparing to cross open terrain with young.
At 1400h an anomalous vocalization: the subject addresses
a raw egg in a pan, narrating its fate in the register
of a sports commentator. The juvenile observes from a high chair,
striking the tray with a spoon. Significance: unknown.
Possibly bonding ritual. Possibly nothing.
At 1830h the subject stands at the west-facing glass
holding the juvenile against one shoulder.
Both are quiet. Both are watching the same cloud.
Note: It is difficult to say where preparation ends
and the journey begins. The field observer suspects
it began this morning, with the first screw removed
from the cot, the first small bed undone.
