NEGATIVE SPACE, n. 1. The region the eye names last. Where nothing has been placed so that everything around it may exist. 2. In astronomy: a patch of sky that returns no signal — not because nothing is there, but because what is there bends light away from arriving. Catalogued by its edges. Named by what surrounds it. 3. In photography: the empty field that is also the subject. The held breath. The long exposure that proves the dark was never empty, only waiting to be asked. 4. In a city at three degrees, on the eighth day of the eighth month, at the exact minute the sun finishes leaving: the space above a roofline where a man moved through his day without remainder. No trace in the signal. No photon disturbed. The absence indistinguishable from the sky.
