โ€œThe Laces He Left Behindโ€

To fasten a lace: Kneel. Place the world's weight on one knee. Cross the left strand over the right. Do not explain the crossing. Make a loop of what you have. Wrap the other strand around it โ€” once, only once. Do not explain the wrapping. Push through. Pull tight, but not so tight the boy flinches. Now the second loop. Hold both. Pull. The bow will either come or it won't. If it comes, stand up. If it doesn't, start again from the crossing. Do not explain why you are kneeling. The wind will move your collar. The boy will look at something above your head. This is not inattention. This is trust. The asphalt will be cold through your trousers. This is nothing. Finish.
