fog, n. 1. A suspended condition; the atmosphere withholding its usual agreement to be transparent. Distinguished from mist by degree, from cloud by altitude, from erasure by intent. 2. (gardening) What arrives on the morning you are finally standing still enough to be found. The kale does not disappear; the kale is simply more honest about what it has always been: the world's last argument for colour. 3. The medium through which a figure becomes a proposition rather than a fact. See also: presence, qualified; beard, amber; coat, dark enough. 4. Not weather. A pressure. Applied from all four edges simultaneously, as if the day itself is making a compositional decision. 5. What the apple tree has been practicing for all autumn — that particular geometry of vanishing, branch by branch, the whole skeleton finally permitted to stop explaining itself. 6. (archaic, gardeners' usage) The second light. The light that asks nothing of you except that you remain.
