RECIPE FOR CROSSING OVER
Ingredients:
1 lanyard, removed at the car door
3 unreturned emails, cooling on the passenger seat
1 commute of exactly the right length
(too short and you arrive still clenched;
too long and you start composing replies)
A handful of clouds, scattered β use whatever the sky gives you
1 onion, for the knife to open
Method:
Loosen the day at its edges. Do not pull.
Let the radio change your subject.
At the threshold, pause longer than necessary.
Notice that the light inside is different
from the light you've been working under.
Peel the onion. Let it answer
for everything you couldn't say since nine a.m.
The sizzle is the first honest sentence of your evening.
Add the second person.
Stir until the kitchen fills with something
that has no calendar invite,
no subject line,
no deliverable.
Serve when ready.
You will know because your shoulders
will be somewhere below your ears.
