Day 347 of 2025
“Waiting Light at the Empty Table”
Inventory of a Table Set for No One
1 linen cloth, ivory, ironed once along the bias
3 plates (the fourth sold at a garage sale in 2019; no one mentions it)
4 forks, silver-plate, tines facing down in the Continental manner
4 knives, ditto, blades turned inward as if ashamed
2 wineglasses, one with a nearly invisible chip on the rim — always placed at the same seat
1 water pitcher, glass, filled to the etched line that means "enough"
4 napkins, folded into triangles, though someone once folded them into swans and everyone laughed
1 candle, unlit
1 window, west-facing, currently admitting the last twelve minutes of direct light
