FIELD NOTE — Viaduct Basin, 21 October
Evening. The harbour is doing its mercury trick again.
Observed: one heron standing in the shallows near Silo Park,
perfectly still while the ferry wake reaches it. The water splits
around its legs like a crowd around a stranger.
Note the precise moment the sky trades gold for violet —
it happens faster than you think. If you blink
you catch only the aftermath: everything suddenly colder,
the cranes gone from silhouette to shadow,
and the heron lifting, finally, into the gap
between two buildings where the wind funnels through
and the sound changes.
All departures have this quality.
The air doesn't close behind you.
It stays open like a question no one asked
because the answer was already walking away.
