FIELD NOTE — Specimen 7, dusk collection
The spiral was already forming when I arrived.
Petals of indigo closing around something
I was not meant to see — a white center,
bone-clean, the way wounds look
after they've decided to cooperate.
I pressed one calendar page between glass slides.
Under magnification: filaments of copper ink,
compression artifacts, a drone's-eye view
of someone else's field.
The wood grain beneath showed through
where the paint had thinned —
the panel remembering
it was once a tree,
the tree remembering
it was once ungoverned.
Humidity at collection: 62%.
Cloud cover: scattered, as predicted.
Subject status: healing.
I left the specimen pinned open
and it continued to spiral
after I turned out the light.
