WELLINGTON HARBOUR, SUNDAY MIDDAY (serves one still afternoon) Ingredients: Warp — 400 threads, undyed, drawn tight as a held breath Weft, sky — pale bone-white and chalky ultramarine, equal unhurried measure Weft, water — Prussian blue and viridian, beaten flat, no slub, no give 1 thread of pale gold, reserved 3 small yachts, sails already slack, add last 0 birds 0 wake 0 wind Method: Mount the warp and do not disturb it again. Pack the sky weft so tight no shuttle-pass shows through. Pack the water tighter still. Set the yachts low; let their hulls stop exactly where the weave runs out — do not finish their edges. Work the gold thread in once, where the sun would be if the sun were allowed to move. Beat everything flat. Serve cold, at noon, to no one.

Beat It Flat

A game where you are the shuttle, and every pass must beat Wellington Harbour's weave so tight that no ripple ever shows through, for one full held breath of stillness.
