SFX — The sound a bar makes when no one is performing. A pint glass set down on timber. Not placed: set down, with the small clunk of glass on wood that is different in every pub and the same in every pub. A pause. Laughter — one person, then the sound of the second person already knowing the punchline, laughing before the end. A chair scraping. The distant compression of a door at the far end of the room opening and closing, sending a cold draught against the neck before the warmth seals back around. Ice in a bucket behind the bar. Someone outside on the street, sound blurred by glass and distance. Another chair. The laughter again, a different shape this time.
