THINGS FOUND IN THE EMPTY BIN:
Nothing.
Nothing at all.
Not the wrapper from the mint on the pillow.
Not the tissue from the first night.
Not the receipt he thought he'd thrown away.
Not the anxiety.
Not the small question he had been carrying since Tuesday.
Not the answer to it.
The bin is empty because he has produced nothing discardable.
This is either very good or the whole problem.

the keycard (present, angle of departure);
the phone (face-down, receiving nothing, refusing nothing);
the bed (made, bearing the ghost of one decision not yet made);
the window (Wellington, cold, continuing regardless).
